6 Tips on How to Tackle Holiday Traffic

The holidays are a special time for families to travel, far and wide, to spend time together. And nothing should put a stop to that, not even stand-still traffic. During this season, it seems like the entire country is getting on the highway all at once.

We've put together a list of six valuable tips for handling traffic, and hopefully, they will help you this Thanksgiving! You have to push through to make it for the turkey dinner.

  1. Plan ahead - Apps like Google Maps, Waze, and more are intended to give you better insight into what kind of road obstacles (construction, collisions, etc.) you may face along your route. If you can dodge any of these slowdowns with an alternative path, take it!
  2. Check the Weather - Bad weather happens, and there's nothing you can do about it. Not only can a rain shower or snowstorm be a downer, but it can significantly make your drive more dangerous. You should always check the weather before you depart to know what to anticipate.
  3. Pack your snacks - Nothing is more horrible than being stuck in traffic with an empty stomach, which is why you should always pack some mess-free snacks!
  4. Drive defensively - It is tempting to pass slow-moving vehicles, but it can be dangerous to weave from lane to lane constantly. Practice defensive driving to ensure you get grandma's in one piece!
  5. Avoid getting road rage - Traffic can be upsetting, but don't let it affect you mentally and emotionally. You should take some deep breaths and focus on the good (that you'll get to see your loved ones soon).
  6. It's okay to take breaks! - If traffic is becoming too overwhelming, you can take the nearest exit to stretch a little. Before you know it, things can clear up by the time you hit the road again.

Everybody dreads congested traffic, but it is something that we all have to deal with during the holidays. However, your safety matters most when it comes to your road trip for Thanksgiving.
